OUTSTANDING ACTIVITIES


1928-1929

Cooperated in Road project.  Built a swimming pool on City Park grounds.  
Sponsored movement in securing a Municipal Airport.  Provided a supervisor for
playground.  Sponsored a Boy Scout Camp.

1933-1934

Assisted in securing right of way for a federal feeder road from Eminence to State
Road No. 39.  Cooperated in a President Roosevelt Birthday Ball.  Held meetings
with neighboring Lions Clubs.  Donated $25 to Boy Scout fund, $25 to local Welfare
Association and $10 to Carnage Library.  Furnished 43 children with eyeglasses and
several others with eye examinations.  Sponsored a concert in Martinsville by the
Lions State Band.  Underwrote playground expenses, to the extent of $275, for
summer of 1934 at the high school athletic field.

1942-1943

Arranged to contribute $40 toward Indiana Booth at International Convention.  Paid
Community House director $75 for one month, also arranged to pay $10 monthly for
one year to Community House.  Entertained company of State G. A. R. encampment
here.  Entered prize-winning float in G. A. R.  Parade.  Held Ladies Nights.  Erected
Lions Service plaque in club room.  Gave diary to members in service.  Sponsored
circus and netted $164.  Assisted with USO drive.  Staged Minstrol Show and also
gave performance at Camp Atterbury Recreation Center and at entertainment for
service men given by Morgantown Lions Club.  Later entertained students who
assisted with Show.  Assisted Gasoline Ration Board.  Bought $60 worth of
furnishings for Camp Atterbury hospital sun room.  Entertained elected county
officials, selective service boards and guests.  Sent 24 dozen cookies to Camp
Atterbury Hospital.  Entertained by Camp Atterbury.  Contributed toward Boy
Scouts.  Infantile Paralysis fund and $25 to Red Cross.  Entertained Basketball team,
coach, assistant coach and other guest.  Purchased roller skates for $25 to contribute
to blind school at Indianapolis.  Instrumental in organizing Martinsville Service
Center.  Sponsored Nashville Lions Club.

1950-1951

Donated $50 to Jaycees for Fourth of July celebration.  Held Charter Anniversary
celebration and Ladies Night.  Sponsored Queen Contest for 4-H County Fair and
netted $3,222 that was turned over to Fair officers.  Entertained Football Squad.  
Contributed $15 to Cancer fund.  Contributed $25 towards Camp Atterbury
Christmas fund, $20 towards Camp’s recreation, $25 to Red Cross, $10 to Infantile
Paralysis fund and $125 to Student Scholarship fund.  Donated $75 to United Appeal.

1964-1965

Sponsored 4-H Queen contestant Polly Tate who was later crowned Queen.  Donated
$50 to help her in state fair competition.  Held Street Dance co-sponsored with
YMCA, 500 in attendance.  Held annual Golf Tournament Lions/Kiwanis.  Lions
won.  Lions manned the bleachers for the all evening performances at the County
Fair.  White Cane purchased for a blind lady.  Held Candy Day.  Our club received a
plaque for winning most points in District.  Glasses, shoes and clothing were
purchased for school and pre-school children this month.  Held Pancake Day in April.
Over $700 was made on our annual Pancake Day.  The club joined with the
townspeople in honoring a local merchant, Jim Kappas as he retired after 45 years of
goodwill.  Held a very successful Fish Fry in June.  Every member and wives worked
hard to help make it a big success.  Operated a Dunking Booth at the Morgan County
Fair.  A good profit was made from the enemies of the Lions members.  Held annual
Steak Fry with Bloomington.  With every member working, we made well over $400
on our annual Christmas Give-Away.  The club awarded a $400 Scholarship to an
outstanding senior girl.  Sold tickets for Carnival to raise money for annual Fall
Festival.  Made over $340 on a Holloween Candy Sale.  Sponsored a Float in the Fall
Festival Parade.

1975-1976

Lions helped place banners around courthouse square for 4th of July.  Gave $40 to
help a Boy Scout go to camp, whose father had deserted the family.  Gave $125 for
eyeglasses for Carl and Treva Croach.  Gave $100 to support local blood draws.  This
covered miscellaneous costs involved with the blood program in our community.  
Members manned the grandstands at Morgan Co. 4-H Fair.  Forty Lions assisted
selling tickets and taking tickets.  Club received $280.  Sponsored Jeanne Bastin, a
local high school graduate, as Fair Queen at 4-H County Fair.  (daughter of Lion
Hubert Bastin).  Purchased steer, and a barrow from young people at Morgan 4-H
County Fair.  Held Fish Fry in June netting $825.  Seat cushion project to assist
athletic program netted $600.  Club airport Trip to Weir Cook Airport a great success,
thanks to Lion Tom Williams and the staff of Trans World Airlines.  Lions and
families (69) had dinner together and these plus about 25 other folks were given a tour
of a Boeing 727 and Lockheed 1011 Jet aircraft.  Donated $325 towards
Scholarships.  Sponsored a Blood Drive.  Received 88 pints of blood.  Gave $300 to
Senior Citizens Center.  Sold Grapefruits and Oranges.  Sold over 21 tons, netted
$3,992.  Sold balloons at booth in Harvest Market for Fall Foliage Festival.  Sold
Halloween candy with $215 profit.  Gave $300 to Senior Citizens Center for older
people in community.  Gave glasses to needy children in amount of $107.  Donated
$200 for Tonometer for District 25-E.  Donated $107 for eyeglasses.

1983-1984

Eyes were taken from donor at Morgan County Hospital and delivered to Indianapolis
Eye Donor Center by Indiana State Police on August 24.  Donated eyes said to have
been in very good shape.  Lions Carl Brown and Jack Spaulding still delivering “Meals
On Wheels” the fourth Tuesday of each month.  Held annual Lions and Wives Fish
Fry at Lion John Hurt’s cabin at Lake Tinky-Poo.  (Lion John’s treat).  Held
successful Rose and Halloween candy sale.  Provided five pairs of eyeglasses for
needy people.  Contributed $250 to Lions Eye Bank, $250 to Lions Cancer Control,
Lions Leader Dog School, $100 to Hearing and Speech, $650 towards Cancer Control
(Microtron).  $100 to Boy Scouts of America, $150 to Primetime Ind., $100 to LCIF,
$150 to School of Hope, $100 to Morgan Co. Rehab., $100 to YMCA, $100 to
Martinsville Arts Council, $204 to 4-H Livestock sale, $100 to Morgan Co. Task
Force, $125 to Martinsville high school Athletic department, $100 to local Baseball
and Softball teams, $100 to Junior Football, $200 to local Senior Center, $100 to Big
Brothers & Sisters, $2337 to Wilber Kendall Room.  Provided eight pairs of
eyeglasses for the needy costing club $332.  Held annual Fish Fry at Court House
Square of Martinsville in June with reports of record profits.  One member David
Collier sold $600 of pre-sale tickets to achieve “Top Cat” status.

1993-1999

Held Fruit Sale.  Paid $250 of the $5,000 Scholarship fund to college bound student.  
Seven Lions spent 37 ½ hours cleaning and cataloging 697 pairs of eyeglasses.  Held
Biscuit and Gravy Breakfast.  Sold 2,540 pounds of Oranges and Grapefruit estimated
profit $5,000.  Provided ten pairs of eyeglasses and exams costing club $784.  At the
Indianapolis Race 14 Lions put in 19 shifts this year.  Jointly with Paragon Lions Club
provided 30 Basketball tickets to Martinsville high school girls and boys Basketball
teams for Indiana/Kentucky All Star Game.  Provided 45 pairs of eyeglasses for the
children costing $3,174.  Twelve Lions manned two booths at the city park a full day
11:00 am to 10:00 pm for the 4th of July Fireworks.  Donated $100 to the 4th of July
Fireworks committee.  Donated $920 to Lions local Quest program.  Nine Lions
picked up trash on state highway 37 for two miles as part of the “Adopt-A-Highway”
program.  Fourth year on the program.  Continued to provide eye exams and glasses
for the needy.  Four Lions washed and sterilized 260 pairs of used eyeglasses for
cataloging.  Participated in Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army.  Fifty six Lions and
spouses attended a Ladies Night at the Beef and Boards in Indianapolis in January.  
Provided 7 pairs of eyeglasses for students, cost $524, eleven exams and glasses, cost
$795.  Contributed $500 to Eye Bank, $500 to Cancer fund, $975 to Speech and
Hearing, $500 to Leader Dog, $1,500 to LCIF.  Provided five eye examinations and
pairs of glasses for school children at a cost of $319.  (39 pairs of eyeglasses at cost of
$2,686.  Contributed $130 to Boy Scouts.  Held Christmas dinner for Lions and
spouses, 59 in attendance.  Golf Outing in August raised $1,797 for local community
projects.  Annual Fish Fry (49th) raised over $3,000 with 32 Lions working.  Donated
$100 to the “Humane Society” for the wonderful animals.  Continued to provide
many eye exams and glasses for the needy.  Twenty six members helped to make
over 600 Pizzas for the club’s annual “Pizza Sale” in March.  Donated $1,150 to
Cancer Control fund.  Held Third annual Golf Tournament in September at the
Foxcliff Golf Club.  Proceeds from the Tournament were donated to the Cancer
Control fund specifically for the “Gamma Knife Project” that the State has committed
to raise $1 Million.  The first Tournament was for Sight First and we raised $2,200.  
Last year we contributed $2,000 to Leader Dog and this year will be for the Gamma
Knife Campaign, open to Lions all over the State.
